How taxis work in Italy
1. Taxis don't stop on the street
In most cities you catch a taxi at taxi ranks (station, airport, main squares), or you book one by phone or app. Hailing one on the street rarely works.
2. Apps vs. phone
The official apps are appTaxi, FreeNow, itTaxi, and Wetaxi: they call a licensed taxi. UberX doesn't exist in Italy; Uber is only available as Uber Black in a few cities. Alternatively, every city has a radio taxi number, which you'll find on its page.
3. Fares
The meter is mandatory. Many airports have a flat fare to the city center: ask for it before you set off. Typical surcharges apply for luggage, holidays, and night hours.
4. ZTL — Limited Traffic Zones
Historic centers are often closed to traffic. The taxi can enter; if you're driving a rental car, it can't (automatic fines apply). That's why a taxi is often the best choice in city centers.
