How to book a taxi in Reggio Calabria
Updated: July 8, 2026 · Province of RC
To book a taxi in Reggio Calabria, call the radio taxi at 0965 27450 or use the itTaxi app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Reggio Calabria the simplest way to find a taxi is to go to one of the Comune's official taxi ranks: the main one is in Piazza Garibaldi, in front of the Stazione Centrale, and a second one is in Piazza Duomo, in the heart of the centro storico; from both you can also phone to have a car sent to you. The city does not yet have a single radio-taxi dispatch centre with one citywide phone number — a municipal project along these lines, with a cooperative and a dedicated app, has been announced but is still being implemented — so as an alternative to the taxi ranks it's worth relying on apps such as itTaxi or Uber (so far active mainly in the Black/NCC version, with UberX announced to arrive by mid-August 2026). Taxi service is also always available in front of the "Tito Minniti" airport terminal and at the port, with fixed fares set by the Comune for the most common routes. Those arriving by air or by sea can therefore count on an organised service with predictable costs, while in the rest of the city the most practical solution remains the taxi rank or booking directly by phone.

Apps to call a taxi in Reggio Calabria
| Uber — In Reggio Calabria, Uber has so far operated mainly in the Black/NCC tier (executive chauffeur-driven cars, advance booking and an in-app agreed fare). Since late June 2026, Calabria has been the first Italian region where UberX (standard fare, non-luxury cars) has also been launched: the service started in Scilla and is active in Catanzaro and at Lamezia Terme airport, with expansion to Reggio Calabria announced for 15 August 2026 — at the time of writing it's worth checking actual availability in the city within the app. | Available |
| itTaxi — Reggio Calabria is among the cities covered by the itTaxi app, which lets you call the city's traditional taxis directly from your smartphone, with the fare shown on the meter. | Available |
| FreeNow — It does not appear among the cities officially listed by FreeNow at the time of checking; the service is concentrated mainly on Italy's major urban centres. | Not available |
| Wetaxi — There is no confirmed coverage of Reggio Calabria city in Wetaxi's official list of cities; the app mentions a general partnership with Trenitalia but without any specific reference to the Reggio airport. | Not available |
| appTaxi — No confirmation of operation in Reggio Calabria: the official apptaxi.it/copertura/ page, which lists over 60 Italian cities served, doesn't include Reggio Calabria among them. | Not available |
Taxi from the airport
Aeroporto dello Stretto "Tito Minniti" (REG) · ~4 km from the center
Taxi fare: 12€ fixed municipal fare for Aeroporto–Stazione Centrale (18€ for Aeroporto–Porto di Reggio Calabria); fixed fares set by the Comune, with no additional surcharges
The "Tito Minniti" airport (Aeroporto dello Stretto, IATA: REG) is located in the Ravagnese district, about 4 km from the city centre, and is managed by SACAL. The taxi rank is in the square in front of the terminal, opposite the arrivals exit, with service always available. Alternatively, there is a free shuttle bus connecting the terminal to the nearby "Reggio Calabria Aeroporto" railway station (about 1 km, with connections timed to flights), and the ATAM urban lines 27 and 28 reach the city centre and Piazza Garibaldi (ticket 1,50€, valid for 75 minutes).
Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)
The centro storico around Corso Garibaldi has a permanent ZTL (limited traffic zone) with electronic access gates (transit reserved for authorised vehicles, with a goods loading/unloading window of 6:00-10:00). From June to September an additional evening-night ZTL (18:00-06:00) is also active on some streets in the centro storico's nightlife area (via Vittorio Emanuele, via Zaleuco, via Orange, via II Settembre), introduced to make evenings out more sustainable. Taxis, as a non-scheduled public service, are generally among the vehicles authorised to access the ZTLs.
Practical tips
- There is not yet a single citywide radio-taxi dispatch centre: the most reliable way to find a taxi is to go to the taxi ranks at Piazza Garibaldi (Stazione Centrale) or Piazza Duomo, or to phone their numbers directly.
- At "Tito Minniti" airport, the ride to the Stazione Centrale has a fixed municipal fare of 12€ (no additional surcharge): check that the driver applies this fixed fare rather than the meter.
- For the Port of Reggio Calabria (hydrofoils and ferries to Sicily) the fixed fare from the airport is 18€; for the Port of Villa San Giovanni it is 35€.
- Many websites with similar names ("Radio Taxi Reggio Calabria", "Cooperativa Taxi Reggio Calabria" and the like) are actually promotional pages run by individual drivers or small groups using a personal mobile phone, not a genuine citywide dispatch centre: useful for booking, but without a large fleet behind them.
- In the centro storico, along Corso Garibaldi and nearby streets, electronic ZTL access gates are active; from June to September additional evening-night restrictions kick in on some streets in the nightlife area, so it's a good idea to give the driver the exact destination address.
