How to book a taxi in Roma
Updated: July 8, 2026 · Province of RM
To book a taxi in Roma, call the radio taxi at 06 0609 or use the itTaxi app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Rome, you can catch a taxi at one of the designated taxi ranks (piazzole) scattered around the city, or call the official single number ChiamaTaxi 060609, run by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, which routes your call to the nearest rank. Alternatively, you can contact one of the large radiotaxi cooperatives directly, such as Radiotaxi 3570 (06 3570), Pronto Taxi 6645 (06 6645) or Samarcanda (06 5551), or book via an app like FreeNow, itTaxi, Wetaxi or appTaxi. The only authorized cars are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof, the Roma Capitale logo, and the license number on the doors: be wary of anyone who approaches you outside the airports offering a ride.

Taxi from the airport
Aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" (FCO) · ~30 km from the center
Taxi fare: Fixed fare Fiumicino - historic centre (within the Aurelian Walls): EUR 55.00, valid in both directions, for up to 4 passengers with luggage included. Maximum fare to/from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (Rome's ring road): EUR 80.00.
Rome is also served by Ciampino airport (CIA), a smaller low-cost hub southeast of the city: the fixed taxi fare for Ciampino-historic centre is EUR 40.00, while Ciampino-Fiumicino costs EUR 55.00. Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), which manages both airports, officially warns that any vehicle other than an authorized white taxi waiting at the exit may be driven by someone without a proper license, charging fares higher than those set by the Municipalities of Rome and Fiumicino.
Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)
Rome's historic centre has an active ZTL (limited traffic zone), running daytime Monday to Friday 6:30-18:00, Saturday 14:00-18:00, and at night on Friday and Saturday 23:00-3:00. Taxis, however, are exempt from the restriction, along with NCC (licensed hire-with-driver cars), residents and people with disabilities: they can enter freely at any time, day or night.
Practical tips
- Taxi ranks (piazzole) are located at key points around the city: Termini, Piazza Venezia, Piazza di Spagna, Colosseo, Vaticano; the full list is published by the Comune di Roma. Hailing a taxi at traffic lights or on the street is not allowed: you must pick one up at a rank or call for one.
- At both airports, ADR (Aeroporti di Roma) officially warns that any car other than an authorized white taxi waiting at the arrivals exit may be operating illegally, charging fares higher than those set by the Municipalities: only get into white cars with a TAXI sign, a working meter, and a visible license number.
- For trips within the Aurelian Walls, always ask for the fixed fare to/from the airports (Fiumicino EUR 55, Ciampino EUR 40): outside that area, the metered fare applies instead, starting from a minimum charge.
- Taxis are among the few vehicles exempt from the historic centre's ZTL and can circulate there freely at any hour, making them the most convenient option for reaching hotels and restaurants in the heart of the city.
