To book a taxi in Genova, call the radio taxi at 010 5966 or use the itTaxi app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Genoa, taxis can be picked up at the taxi ranks in Piazza De Ferrari, Stazione Principe and Stazione Brignole, or you can call Radiotaxi 5966 at 010 5966, the historic cooperative that brings together about 90% of the city's taxi drivers. Taxi fare: Fixed-rate ride between the airport and the city centre: 25 € for up to 4 passengers, 30 € for 5 or more; a 2 €/person surcharge applies in the evening/night hours and on public holidays. The fixed fare includes luggage and motorway tolls.
Cristoforo Colombo Airport is relatively small (located in Sestri Ponente, about 7 km from the centre) and mainly serves domestic and European flights; taxis wait outside the Arrivals area, on the ground floor, with round-the-clock service 24 hours a day.
Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)
Genoa's historic centre has a ZTL ("Centro Storico" limited traffic zone) active every day of the year, 24 hours a day. Taxis (public hire cars) have free access without needing a permit, as set out in the City Council's ZTL regulations, unlike unauthorized private cars.
Practical tips
- The main taxi ranks are at Piazza De Ferrari, in front of Genova Piazza Principe station and Genova Brignole station; for the direct route between the two stations there is a fixed per-person fare (minimum 3 passengers).
- In the city centre there is also a "taxi al volo" (flag-down) service in the City area, with a fixed per-person fare for short trips, useful as an alternative to the metered fare.
- The City of Genoa warns about the risk of unlicensed taxis, more common in the evening near the railway stations and airport arrivals: only get into white cars with a visible licence and a working meter, since using an unlicensed taxi also carries a fine for the passenger.
- Taxis have free access to the historic centre's ZTL (active 24 hours a day, every day), unlike unauthorized private cars: this makes them the most convenient way to reach right into the caruggi (the old town's narrow lanes).
