How to book a taxi in Taranto
Updated: July 12, 2026 · Province of TA
To book a taxi in Taranto, call the radio taxi at 099 735 4858 or use the itTaxi app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Taranto, the simplest way to find a taxi is to call one of the city's radio taxi services directly, which answer 24 hours a day: among the cooperatives with an active switchboard are Taxi Due Mari, Taxi Ionica, Taranto Taxi and Taxi Driver. Since 30 April 2026, the Comune has also introduced fixed-rate agreed fares on certain routes of particular public interest (hospitals, strategic hubs), while for all other destinations the use of the taximeter remains compulsory. Those who prefer to book from their smartphone can use the itTaxi or InTaxi apps, both active within the municipal area; Uber, on the other hand, does not yet offer a genuine ride-hailing service in the city, only the Uber Rent car rental marketplace. Taxis can also be found at the ranks near the Piazza della Libertà railway station and near the Ponte Girevole, the mandatory crossing point between Città Vecchia and Borgo.

Apps to call a taxi in Taranto
| Uber — There is no active Uber ride-hailing service in Taranto: the city does not appear in the official list of Italian cities served on uber.com, and the only Uber page dedicated to Taranto is the Uber Rent marketplace (self-drive car rental with partners such as Avis, Budget, Hertz), not rides with a driver. | Not available |
| FreeNow — It was not possible to confirm coverage of Taranto on the official FreeNow website (the city page was unreachable during verification); the app focuses on major Italian cities, so it should be considered likely unavailable until confirmed otherwise. | Not available |
| itTaxi — Taranto appears as a served provincial capital in the official list of cities covered on ittaxi.it; the local partner Taxi Ionica also operates in the city through the app. | Available |
| Wetaxi — The official coverage pages and the dedicated city page (site.wetaxi.it) do not list Taranto among the cities with an active Wetaxi taxi service; the city's name appears only in a press release about a scooter/electric vehicle partnership with Bit Mobility, not regarding taxi booking. | Not available |
| appTaxi — Not available: on the official page of cities covered by appTaxi, only Lecce appears in Puglia, not Taranto. | Not available |
| BTaxi — Not available: according to the app's official description, BTaxi only operates in Alessandria, Torino, Empoli, Bologna and Barcelona; Taranto is not among the cities covered. | Not available |

Taxi from the airport
Aeroporto del Salento (Brindisi-Casale) (BDS) · ~78 km from the center
There is no fixed municipal fare for the Taranto-airport route: out-of-town trips are negotiated as a flat rate with the operator (all the city's radio taxi services run transfers to Bari and Brindisi). Note: Taranto-Grottaglie airport ("Marcello Arlotta"), just 16-24 km from the centre, remains excluded from scheduled civil flights under the National Airports Plan 2026-2035 and is currently used only for private aviation/cargo, so the nearest commercial airport actually usable remains Brindisi (about 78 km), followed by Bari Karol Wojtyła (about 83 km).
Practical tips
- The Ponte Girevole, which connects Città Vecchia to Borgo, is periodically opened to let Marina Militare ships pass: when it rotates, traffic (including taxis) can be held up for 15-20 minutes, so it's worth allowing extra time if your route goes that way.
- To enter or leave Città Vecchia (the island between Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo, home to the Castello Aragonese and the historic alleyways) taxis are allowed to travel through the ZTL, unlike unauthorised private cars.
- For transfers to Bari or Brindisi airport, the port, or trade fairs/events, it's always worth asking for a phone quote before the ride: these are out-of-town routes with negotiated fares, not covered by the urban taximeter or by the new agreed municipal fares.
- In 2025 the "Taxi Rosa" service was launched on a trial basis, designed for the safe evening/night transport of women travelling alone, with the collaboration of the city's main taxi cooperatives: if available, it's worth requesting it when booking by phone.
- Those visiting MArTA (the National Archaeological Museum) or the industrial areas (ILVA, port/military zones) will find it easier to book by phone or app rather than hoping to flag down a passing taxi, especially outside the centre.
Frequently asked questions
How do you call a taxi in Taranto?
You can call one of the city's radio taxi services directly (e.g. Taxi Driver 099 453 4828, Taxi Due Mari 099 735 4858, Taxi Ionica 388 636 3659, Taranto Taxi 320 573 3641) or book through the itTaxi or InTaxi apps. Taxis can also be found at the ranks near the Piazza della Libertà railway station and near the Ponte Girevole.
How much does a taxi from Taranto to Bari or Brindisi airport cost?
There is no fixed municipal fare for these out-of-town routes: the price is agreed as a flat rate with the operator at the time of booking. It's always worth asking for a quote by phone or WhatsApp before getting in, clearly stating the airport and flight.
Does Uber work in Taranto?
No, not yet as a chauffeured ride service: Taranto is not on the official list of Italian cities covered by Uber. The only presence of the brand in the city is the Uber Rent page for self-drive car rental, which has nothing to do with taxi rides.
Can taxis enter Città Vecchia, where the ZTL is?
Yes. The Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) of the historic centre (between piazza Castello, via Paisiello, via San Francesco and the adjoining alleyways) bans access for unauthorised private cars, but taxis are among the vehicles allowed to serve the island of Città Vecchia.
Are there fixed fares for getting to the hospital or the port?
Since 30 April 2026, the Comune di Taranto has approved fixed, all-inclusive agreed fares on certain routes of particular public and social interest (including connections to healthcare facilities); for all other destinations, use of the taximeter remains compulsory, as set out in the municipal Regulation for taxi and NCC services.
