How to book a taxi in Merano
Updated: July 10, 2026 · Province of BZ
To book a taxi in Merano, call the radio taxi at 0473 212013 or use the Alto Adige Taxi Südtirol app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Merano, the renowned spa town of Alto Adige, taxis are booked mainly by phone, by contacting one of the two cooperatives operating in the city: Radio Taxi Meran and Smart Taxi Meran. There aren't numerous taxi ranks with cars always waiting, as in big cities: for rides within the centre, the cooperatives generally ask you to call at least 10 minutes in advance, while online booking is designed mainly for destinations outside the city. Both cooperatives can also be reached through the regional app Alto Adige Taxi Südtirol, which covers both Bolzano and Merano and lets you track the car in real time from your smartphone. A convenient landmark is the taxi rank in front of Merano railway station (Piazza Stazione), useful for those arriving by train or needing to reach Bolzano airport. Authorised taxis, unlike private cars, can also travel through the limited traffic zones (ZTL) of the historic centre.

Taxi from the airport
Aeroporto di Bolzano Dolomiti (BZO) · ~28 km from the center
Bolzano airport doesn't always have taxis waiting on site: the information desk can arrange one on request. For those arriving in or departing from Merano (about a 30-minute drive), it's best to book in advance by calling Radio Taxi Meran or Smart Taxi Meran directly; alternatively, for a taxi on the Bolzano side, you can call Radio Taxi Bolzano on 0471 981111.
Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)
The historic centre of Merano has several limited traffic zones (ZTL) monitored by camera-equipped access gates; authorised taxis are among the vehicles allowed to pass through, unlike unauthorised private cars. Requests for a temporary permit are handled through the Municipality (vbz.ztl@comune.merano.bz.it).
Practical tips
- For rides within the centre of Merano, both cooperatives ask for a direct phone call with at least 10 minutes' notice; online bookings via app are designed mainly for destinations outside the city.
- At Merano railway station (Piazza Stazione) there is generally a taxi waiting 24/7; alternatively, you can call Radio Taxi Meran or Smart Taxi Meran.
- Taxis are among the vehicles authorised to travel through the ZTL of Merano's historic centre: if you're staying on a street within the limited traffic zone, the taxi can still take you right to the door.
- Merano is also called "Meran" in German: on signage, on taxi cooperative websites (e.g. Funk Taxi Meran) and in conversation you may come across both names, since the area is bilingual Italian-German.
- The Municipality of Merano also runs subsidised taxi services for residents (the "pink taxi" for women aged 16 and over, and taxis for over-70s): these can't be used by tourists, but they show how widespread and well-regulated the taxi service is in the city.
