How to book a taxi in Venezia
Updated: July 8, 2026 · Province of VE
To book a taxi in Venezia, call the radio taxi at 041 5964 or use the appTaxi app. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.
In Venice, the historic centre is entirely pedestrian and car-free: the car taxi only reaches as far as Piazzale Roma, where you call Radiotaxi Venezia (Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi) at 041 5964, available 24 hours a day. To get around the historic centre by water, there is instead the water taxi, a separate and more expensive service run by consortia such as Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia (041 240 6711); alternatively, the appTaxi app lets you book both the car taxi and the water taxi from your smartphone.

Apps to call a taxi in Venezia
| Uber — Only Uber Black (premium NCC chauffeur-driven car, run through the itTaxi consortium) and Uber Van are available: there is no standard Uber/UberX. It covers Venice-Mestre and the airport, but cars still cannot enter the historic centre, so the ride ends at Piazzale Roma. | Available |
| appTaxi — This is the official app of the Radiotaxi Venezia cooperative and the only app that lets you book a water taxi as well as a regular car taxi for the airport, Mestre, and Piazzale Roma. | Available |
| itTaxi — Covers Venice/Mestre and lets you call car taxis from the local cooperative; useful for rides on the mainland and to the airport. | Available |
| FreeNow — Does not appear to be active in Venice: the service in Italy covers other major cities (Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples, and others), but not Venice. | Not available |
| Wetaxi — Does not appear to operate a taxi service in Venice; in the city it is only present for micromobility services (scooters/bikes) through third-party partners. | Not available |
Taxi from the airport
Aeroporto di Venezia Marco Polo (VCE) · ~13 km from the center
Taxi fare: Official fixed fare (Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi / City of Venice): Marco Polo Airport – Piazzale Roma €40; Airport – Mestre centro €35; Airport – Stazione Marittima (cruise terminal) €45; Airport – Favaro tram terminus €12. The taxi only goes as far as Piazzale Roma: from there the historic centre is reached on foot, by vaporetto, or with a second transfer by water taxi.
Venice is also served by the smaller Treviso-Sant'Angelo "Antonio Canova" Airport (TSF), used mainly by low-cost flights, about 30 km from Venice (connected by ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma and Mestre); for a first arrival, however, Marco Polo remains the natural choice.
Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)
The historic centre of Venice does not have a ZTL in the traditional sense: it simply has no roads for vehicles, so no car (taxis included) can access it. A genuine ZTL with cameras, active 24 hours a day, does exist instead in the central area of Mestre (mainland), where regular taxis are nonetheless authorized to circulate.
Practical tips
- The car taxi CANNOT enter the historic centre: the only arrival/departure point is Piazzale Roma (or Tronchetto island). From there you continue on foot, by vaporetto, or by switching to a water taxi to reach hotels tucked among the calli.
- Before setting off, explicitly ask for the fixed fare to apply (airport-Piazzale Roma, airport-Mestre, etc.) to avoid price disputes: fixed fares are set by the City and do not always include all surcharges (luggage, night rate, Stazione Marittima).
- The water taxi is a separate service, more expensive than the car taxi: fares include supplements for luggage beyond 4 suitcases and for night rides (10pm-7am). At the airport, only authorized operators may pick up passengers from the official pontoons: be wary of anyone offering rides outside authorized boarding points.
- In Mestre (mainland) there is a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) active 24 hours a day with electronic access control: regular taxis may drive through it, but if you rent a private car, check the access points before entering.
Frequently asked questions
Will the taxi take me all the way to my hotel in the historic centre of Venice?
No: no car, taxis included, can enter the historic centre, which is entirely pedestrian and water-based. The car taxi goes at most as far as Piazzale Roma (or Tronchetto); from there you continue on foot, by ACTV vaporetto, or by water taxi, a separate and more expensive service run by different operators (e.g. Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia).
How much does a water taxi cost in Venice?
Water taxi fares are set by the City of Venice and are higher than car taxi fares: a base fare applies, plus supplements for luggage beyond 4 suitcases and for night rides (10pm-7am). Updated fares are published on the City of Venice website (comune.venezia.it) and on the websites of consortia such as Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia.
How do I call a taxi in Venice by phone?
For a car taxi (useful for the airport, Mestre, or Piazzale Roma) call Radiotaxi Venezia (Cooperativa Artigiana Radiotaxi) at 041 5964, active 24 hours a day. For a water taxi you can go to one of the municipal taxi stands or call the single regional number 199 48 49 50.
