How to book a taxi in Positano

Updated: July 10, 2026 · Province of SA

To book a taxi in Positano, call the radio taxi at 339 201 3482. Taxis don't stop on the street: you book them or catch one at a taxi rank.

Don't expect to find taxis waiting visibly along the streets in Positano the way you would in a big city: the small taxi rank in Piazza dei Mulini holds only a handful of cars, so the most reliable way to get around remains calling a local operator directly or asking your hotel to book the ride. The town is served by a few long-established companies, such as Positano Taxi Service (operating since 1994) and Positano Tonytaxi, both reachable by phone or WhatsApp. The narrow, steep streets full of steps, combined with heavy traffic on the SS163 in peak season, make booking ahead almost essential, especially for transfers to and from Napoli-Capodichino airport. Since 15 April 2024, moreover, taxis (not just NCC chauffeur-driven cars) must also pay a pass to drive through the ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the town centre, a cost that may be reflected in the fare agreed with the driver. The major national ride-hailing apps (Uber, FreeNow, itTaxi, Wetaxi) do not cover Positano, so phone and WhatsApp remain the main tools for arranging a ride.

Apps to call a taxi in Positano

Uber — Not available in Positano or elsewhere in the Costiera Amalfitana. In Italy UberX operates only in Roma and Milano; further south, where the app is active at all, it is limited to hailing local taxis or NCC chauffeur-driven cars (Uber Black), without a genuine network of its own on the ground. Not available
FreeNow — Covers only Cagliari, Catania, Milano, Napoli, Palermo, Roma and Torino: Positano and the rest of the Costiera Amalfitana are not within the service area. Not available
itTaxi — Active in around 90 Italian towns and cities, including Napoli, but no taxi in Positano is affiliated with the app. Not available
Wetaxi — Present in over 20 cities (including Roma, Milano, Napoli, Torino), but does not cover Positano or the other towns of the Costiera Amalfitana. Not available
appTaxi — Operating in over 50 Italian cities, including Napoli, but Positano is not among the towns served by the platform. Not available
BTaxi — Covers only a limited number of cities in northern Italy (Torino, Bologna, Alessandria, Empoli, Genova): no presence in Campania or the Costiera Amalfitana. Not available

Taxi from the airport

Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli-Capodichino (NAP) · ~65 km from the center

Taxi fare: €145 (predetermined one-way fare, Airport → Positano)

The fixed fare of €145 is published by the Comune di Napoli (resolution G.C. no. 258/2024) and listed on the official website of Aeroporto di Napoli (GESAC): it applies to the ride from the airport to Positano and includes the radio taxi call-out, airport surcharge, night/holiday surcharge and luggage, but excludes motorway tolls. For the return trip (from Positano to the airport) there is no fixed municipal fare: it is common practice in the Costiera Amalfitana to agree the price with the driver before setting off. The new Aeroporto di Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi (Pontecagnano) reinstated scheduled flights in 2026 (Aeroitalia, Iberia from November) and is closer as the crow flies, but the road connection to Positano still follows the winding coastal SS163, and the flight network remains limited for now. In high season, for Capri, Amalfi or Salerno, the ferry from Positano can be a faster and more reliable alternative to a road transfer.

Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL)

Since 15 April 2024 (Municipal Council resolution no. 37 of 21/03/2024, upheld by the TAR regional administrative court and the Council of State), taxis too, in addition to NCC chauffeur-driven cars, must pay to travel through the one-way section Via Pasitea - Piazza dei Mulini - Via Cristoforo Colombo, for vehicles with more than 5 seats in total. Rates start at €5 for a daily pass, with monthly, six-monthly and annual options; payment is made exclusively through the official ztlpositano.it portal, after registration and validation by the Polizia Municipale (local police) via PagoPA. The pass authorises transit only, not parking along the route.

Practical tips

Frequently asked questions

How much does a taxi from Positano to Napoli airport cost?

For the ride from Aeroporto di Napoli-Capodichino to Positano, the Comune di Napoli publishes a predetermined fare of €145 per vehicle (one way), including the airport surcharge, radio taxi call-out, luggage and night/holiday surcharge, but not motorway tolls. For the return trip, from Positano to the airport, there is no fixed fare: the price must be agreed with the driver before departure, as is customary in the Costiera Amalfitana.

Can you find taxis free on the street in Positano?

Rarely. The main rank is the small Piazza dei Mulini, which holds only a handful of cars, and a second reference point is on Viale Pasitea, near Via Cristoforo Colombo. The most reliable solution remains calling a local operator in advance or having your hotel book the ride.

Do Uber or other apps work in Positano?

No: neither Uber nor FreeNow, itTaxi, Wetaxi, appTaxi or BTaxi cover Positano or the rest of the Costiera Amalfitana. The phone (including via WhatsApp) remains the main tool for booking a ride.

Does Positano's ZTL also apply to taxis?

Yes. Since 15 April 2024 the Comune has extended the access payment for the one-way section Via Pasitea-Piazza dei Mulini-Via Cristoforo Colombo to taxis as well as NCC chauffeur-driven cars, with rates starting from €5 a day up to annual passes, payable only through the official ztlpositano.it portal.

Which is the most convenient airport for reaching Positano?

The main reference remains Napoli-Capodichino (around 65 km, 70-90 minutes by car), with a fixed taxi fare published by the Comune di Napoli. The new Aeroporto di Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi is closer as the crow flies but still has a limited flight network in 2026, and the road connection to Positano isn't necessarily faster, given the long coastal route.
